Message from the Chairman

It is with great sadness that I must report the passing of our former Chairman, Peter Pugh, on Friday 3rd November.

Pete was Chairman of Hunters Badminton Club, prior to me taking on the job. With Rosemary by his side, they successfully ran the club for more years than most will recollect.

Pete retired from playing due to ill health a few seasons ago with Rosemary continuing her efforts as Treasurer to the club.

Our thoughts and best wishes go to Rosemary, their son David, and the rest of the family at this very difficult time.

If anyone wishes to send messages to the family please use the contact us page and we will ensure the messages are passed on.

Tom Marsh Tournament 2023

We are holding our club tournament on Thursday 7th December. We are hoping that most members will want to join in.

The tournament entry is covered under the club membership fees. Winners will be awarded a trophy each.

Members to enter as individuals and the organisers will allocate the pairings to make all games competitive and will handicap only if necessary.

Pairs will initially be split into groups for a ‘round robin’ first round (number of groups and size of group will be determined by number of entries). The winners of each group will then play off until we have a winner.

We need names as soon as possible please so we can start to make all the arrangements for a fun night of competition.

Please give your name to Barbara or any of the committee members as soon as possible. A sign-up sheet will be available at Club Night.

December tournament – volunteers wanted

We have our badminton club tournament on Thursday 14th December for all members to join in. We would like to ask if anyone might be willing to help plan, organise the tournament please. We only need one or two volunteers. Please let one of the committee know if you’re interested.

July Social – Picnic (Cancelled)

Please come along to our next social event….

Badminton Club Picnic & Rounders

1-6pm on Sunday 16th July at Cawston Play Area

(the green area next to the play area)

Everyone and their families and friends are welcome.

We are hosting an afternoon of fun with a picnic and games of rounders.

It would be great if people can bring a picnic dish to share of either Chinese or Italian cuisine, style. If you let me know what you would like to bring, Alex and I are happy to co-ordinate to make sure we have a good mix of savoury and sweet foods.

You will need to bring some blankets, chairs, drinks, plates, cutlery etc … usual things including some other games if you or your kids do not fancy the rounders….

Small picnic tables would be handy for serving the food if you have them please…

Please feel free to catch me or Alex at badminton to ask any questions, get more information.

It would be great fun to have as many people there as possible ….

Annual General Meeting

The club will be holding their Annual General Meeting on Thursday 15th June at Harris Sports Centre Start time 8.00pm prompt.

Club night will start after the meeting concludes. We aim to be done before 8.30pm to minimise the interruption to club night.

All members and regular players should attend to ensure their queries and thoughts are included in the running of the club.

Remembering Tom Marsh

Dear members and friends of Hunters Badminton Club,

We are saddened to hear the media reports from Chile regarding the passing of former member of the club, and our friend, Professor Tom Marsh. Tom has been missing since late September whilst on a scientific research visit at Chile’s La Silla Observatory in the Atacama desert.

We extend our deepest condolences and best wishes to Tom’s family and friends at what will be a very difficult time.

Tom was a member of the club for many years and regular attendee of our club nights. He also played for our league teams.

Most will remember Tom as being a skilled and dedicated player, and a complete gentleman. He will also be fondly remembered by some for his unusual drinking receptacles, ranging from milk bottles to olive oil bottles. To my knowledge, he is the only person to be spoken to by centre staff about bringing a wine bottle (containing water) onto the premises!

To mark our respect we will be holding a minute’s silence during club night on Thursday 17th November so we can take a moment to reflect on our memories of Tom. This will be done at 8.30pm and a whistle will be blown to mark the start and finish. During this time we ask all members to allow those who wish to reflect to do so.

If anyone wishes to send any personal messages to the family, please contact JP who is in contact with Tom’s family and we can find the best way to send those on.

Kind regards,

Steve Turner
