2015/6 Season

Jubilee 3 vs Hunters Cov 1

New promoted Hunters 1st team (Coventry League) started the season with an away fixture at Jubilee St Augustines 3rd team. The first pairing of Michal Helis and Aseem Shama fought a close first match, narrowly losing both games 21-19, while second pair Shahid Mirza and Phil Pelton comfortably took their first match. Third pair Lee Rickard and Simon Piercy scored admirably in their first match, but couldn’t defeat Jubilee’s third pair, who proved the strongest pairing on the night.

Michal and Aseem won their second match, but the next three games all went to Jubilee, before Shahid and Phil won in the 8th, and Simon and Lee won in the final 9th match.

Overall a close match with Jubilee winning 5-4 on the night. A promising start to the season with all three pairings winning at least one match.

Hunters Cov 2 vs Stockingford 2

A banged up Hunters 2 got their Coventry league season underway last week at home to Stockingford. The first pairing of team captain David Pugh and Antonio Hui got off to a fast start winning the first game 21-12. Unfortunately they failed to capitalise on this lead losing the second game 21-18 and the third 25-23. The second pairing of the experienced Martin Toms and the 11th hour hero Ian Francis also went to 3 games in their rubber eventually winning 21-12 in the third. The much younger pairing of Mark Lorraine and Nat Toms also went to a third game winning their rubber to put Hunters 2-1 up.

The second round of games saw two more tight rubbers with the second and third pairings both pushing Stockingford close before losing in the third game. Hui and Pugh however won their rubber comfortably to level the score at 3-3 going into the final round of games.

Needing just 2 rubbers for victory Hunters got off to a great start with Pugh and Hui winning their second rubber of the night 21-18 & 21-17. Mark and Nat put up a strong fight against Stockingford’s top pairing ultimately falling 21-16 & 21-14. Ian and Martin were however able to win their final rubber 21-11 & 24-22 to give Hunters a 5-4 victory.

Hunters 2 vs Hunters 1

Today’s match is the quick reverse of last week with the Hunters 2 team (Home) taking on the Hunters 1 team (Away). The first rubber kicked off with Neil Porter / Lee Rickard (Hunters 2) against Antonio Hui / Shahid Mirza (Hunters 1), with an excellent victory going to the 2nd team in the relative comfort of straight games. Meanwhile Simon Piercy / David Pugh (Hunters 2) challenged Michal Helis / Wing To (Hunters 1), this time the 1st team taking a straightforward win.

With honours even, the opposite fixtures were a much closer match up, with both going to 3 games, however Hunters 1 edged both in the 3rd game to put them 3-1 up in rubbers.

The first split pitched David / Lee against Shahid / Wing. Again another close rubber going to 3 games, the 1st team getting the better in a close final game finishing 19-21.

The final split game also went to three games, this time Simon / Neil for Hunters 2 getting the better of Michal / Antonio 21-16 in the last game.

Final score Hunters 1 win 4 rubbers to 2. A very respectable result for the 2nd team, with 2 rubbers and 7 games won on the night.

Shot of the night goes to Antonio who pulled off an amazing return winner of David’s net smash from point blank range, to win a round of applause from everyone in the hall.

Hunters 4 vs Hunters 3

No respite for Hunters 4 as again they took on the third team. With Dan Nutt now away at university Dan Bunker dropped down to the 4ths and Phil Lindley came in to play for the 3rd team. While most of the games were very close only Martin Toms and Luke Francis were able to actually able to take a game off Phil Lindley and Simon Davies. Luke showed he is fast getting used to playing league badminton and with Nat Toms this time gave Ian Francis a sterner test though Ian showed no signs of relinquishing his number one spot in the family. Martin and Dan had very close games with Dave Watkin and Phil Lindley but without any success so another 0 – 6 result and it’s looking like it will be a tough season for the 4ths

Hunters 1 vs Hunters 2

The first match of the season saw the Hunters 2 team (Away) take on the Hunters 1 team (Home). The initial Hunters 2 pairings were Antonio Hui / Paul Garner and Neil Porter / Simon Piercy. With the 1st team arriving late, we kicked off with Antonio and Paul playing Michal Helis and Wing To, while Neil and Simon waited patiently for the opposition, watching the action. A fantastic first game was won by the 1st team 23-21, followed by an equally close 21-18 sealing the first rubber for Hunters 1.

When Phil Pelton finally turned up, he paired with Aseem Sharma to take on Simon and Neil, which Hunters 1 took without much trouble. Another great match saw Simon and Neil taking the first game 19-21 against Michal and Wing, and on route for an upset on the night. Sadly the second game started well for Hunters 2, but a run of points in the mid-game for the 1st team saw them take the second game comfortably. This was followed by a very close third game with the 1st team taking the rubber with a 21-18 win.

From that point onwards Hunters 1 showed their superiority, and ran out the rest of the games without too much trouble. The split put Paul / Simon against Phil / Wing, and Michal / Aseem against Antonio / Neil, but despite scoring strongly throughout, Hunters 2 couldn’t edge another game.

Very well played to both teams, the result was never in doubt, but Hunters 2 showed their determination.

Hunters 3 vs Hunters 4

What was looking likely to be a lads versus Dads match with the Watkins, Francis and Toms families lining up against each other was thrown into chaos when late injuries ruled out Dan Watkin and Simon Davies but a quick reorganization and a late call up for Dan Nutt allowed the match to continue. While Dan Nutt and Nat Toms made Mark Taylor and Dan Bunker sweat a little Hunters 3 proved too strong and won all the initial rubbers. Changing of pairings and Martin Toms and the excellent Dan Nutt pushed Mark Taylor and Dave Watkin to a deciding game before succumbing while Ian Francis showed family gets no mercy with he and Dan Bunker comfortably beating Luke Francis and Nat Toms
